PC Game - Activision's Star Trek Armada (2000)

Well, it's been almost two years since I released my first Star Trek Armada mod... It was a funny thing, back then. I didn't even know what modding was until my cousin stuffed James Bryant's first mod down my face, and... well... I wasn't impressed. All he added was a bunch of new weapons to ships that I thought didn't deserve them... However,  I didn't like the movie American Beauty either, but that doesn't mean I didn't appreciate it as a good movie... And though Bryant's mod did not impress me, the programming talent of modders like him sure as hell did, and what else could I do but start releasing mods myself? I must've released around half a dozen mods from April to August 2000, beginning with version 0.20 and ending with version 0.65SE or some crap like that...

And gosh darn it, call me insanely nostalgic if you will, but I saved a few of those Star Trek Armada forum threads that I took a part of back in those good ol' modding days... I'm not sure, um, sure if I'm legally permitted to repost them here, but I thought, oh why the hell not?... since the real forum was demolished and taken down   long before Armada 2 ever did come out... heh... and to think, I haven't tried Armada 2 even once yet, let alone mod for it... but oh well, AOL, I digress. Back to the story...

It was through my Armada modding experience that I cursed myself with the name of the "no-name modder". It wasn't until my very last mod that I earned even the slightest stitch or itch of fame, and even then, my mod barely mustered up more than a few dozen downloads. While Armada sites all across the net were scrambling for reviews and news on mods made by Orzel, Jc, Futility, Thunderst, Ares1999, Deemon, Sim Rex, and all the rest that I can't remember right now, my mod was reduced to being just a single link on a single website, situated in a place that no-one would ever bother to look... And what really got to my inner workings  was how whenever I posted a message in a thread outside of my own threads, nobody would ever, ever respond to me... Even in the threads I reposted below, most forum posters still refused to acknowledge my presence... Hell, I didn't call myself the no-name modder just because my mod was completely outshadowed by everybody else's. I called myself the no-name modder, because it really seemed at times as if I was the little brother of the group, as if I were that geeky guy who the big players always seem to ignore...

heh... I was the geek amongst the Star Trek geeks and the programming geeks... cool... Though I will admit, I did get recognition in two of the threads below. It's just that, well...  there were so many, countless other threads where no matter what message I posted, nobody seemed to care... I mean, did they listen and read? Probably. But they just didn't care... not that that's really a bad thing, in the middle of online, inline, inbred flame wars...

Anyhew, below are download links to my final mod and to those forum threads that I've reposted for no logical reason on this site... I've shortened a few usernames and eliminated a few 'bump' messages, but I assure that you 99.9% of what was truly said is etched in stone in the following links below... So if anyone reading this took part in those forums, prepare for an IvanF shockwave of nostalgia, Federation style:

- IvanF's No-Name Brand Star Trek Armada Mod version 0.60 -
Well, here it is, for all those Armada mod collectors and those two of you who might actually want my mod back for good, ol' nostalgic times... I just hope my server doesn't delete this link. My mod is 1.10 megs zipped, so it might exceed the largest zip file I'm allowed to keep online (Update: yeah, it couldn't fit, so I aced it and hopefully the two of you who actually want my mod have winace version 2 installed on your system)... I never really did like playing my mod. I enjoyed working on it. I enjoyed the struggle to find creative game balance, although I guess that was a futile endeavour in the end... but did I ever play it after I was done? I doubt it. Will I ever look at it again? I don't think so, but miracles are known to happen... Anyhew, maybe one day I'll post every single incarnation on my mod online, starting from version 0.20 to my unofficial, last ever mod of version 0.65SE. And if my server allows me to, I'll post those Fragaday executable versions some day as well.

- ATTENTION ALL EXPERIENCED RTS PLAYERS! (IvanF's Mod 0.56) -
Well, there's not much I can say about version 0.56 of my mod. I did make a short online friend for a while when EMH of Borg was the first and one of the only to compliment my mod, I think... It was also through this thread that I met Fragaday who was both kind and talented enough to make an excellent, executable installer and uninstaller for version 0.60 of my mod. Without him and HughJorgen, the last version of my mod would've been as much of a non-factor as my first... Too bad I don't have any forum threads saved from my earlier mods, although I do have some notes left over from my tweakui.mycrowsoft.com Y2kk update site...

- Who wants Armada to Run Smoother, have Better Pathfinding, & Tougher AI? (IvanF's mod 0.60) -
This was my last mod and the only one that I consider a success. Although EMH of Borg left the forum for what seemed like an eternity, kind guys like Trekker15b and Fbrg stepped up to the plate and complimented my mod. And once again, you have the usual threesome of me, Fragaday, and HughJorgen all working together to make names for ourselves. I'm not sure what happened to Fragaday, but I do know that HughJorgen became huge as perhaps the single greatest distributor of Armada mods of all time... If those two ever do read this, from the bottom of my no-name heart, I'd just like to thank Fragaday and HughJorgen for, um... giving me an experience as unforgettable as the threesome of Kirk, Spock, and... um... the other guy...

- My Hats Off to Modders; Who are the Modding Gods?; E&F Unbeatable AI -
I'm not really featured in any of the three threads featured in this reposting. I tried replying to Wicked, the administrator of the board, in "My hats off to modders", but he never responded back and no-one else seemed to care that I was there... And although I never posted once I think in the modding gods thread, I was pleasantly surprised that I was mentioned by Futility as one of the greats (which, coming from him a modder like him, was a real compliment in my eyes)... unfortunately, nobody else seemed to remember my name. But I guess it can't rain all the time... And as for my  E&F AI posting, I hated what I wrote. It was simply an obnoxious cry to be noticed, because everyone was complimenting the E&F guys for having such damn fine, cheating AI... and, uh... was it me, or did nobody ever notice that I had cheating AI more than four months before E&F ever came out? I mean, allowing the computer to cheat and piss on human players should be nothing to boast about, and yet... I  know this makes me sound shallow, but why did everyone praise E&F's AI, when nobody but Trekker15b way back in time mentioned mine?... Was it the advertising? Was it the marketing? Was it the big names? Or was it simply the fact that I am forever to be known as the no-name modder?...

- Wow, I guess IvanF really is retired...; HughJorgen -
These last two posts are really nothing special at all. I was bored one day, so I started a short thread dealing with life after modding... As for the HughJorgen post, somebody had criticized him one day or something, so Futility and the rest of us gathered in a huddle of athread to honour our fallen, tragic hero. And in the process, I actually got a huge shock... Once again, Futility thanked me, this time for my tendency to resist flame wars at all costs. And although I do feel bad about posting at the end of the thread about my selfish self and not HughJorgen, I can't help but thank Futility for the honours that he has bestowed on me... And I guess that was the end of my Star Trek Armada days. I haven't picked up the game since I, uh... last put it down... or, the last time I modded it, I mean... and it's funny, really. I got Armada as a birthday present, but I never played it once without some mod mucking up the game... I mean, Armada wasn't a game to me. It was a job, a job to get my name known... And although nobody knew the name of IvanF by the be-it, end-all of it all, I'm pretty damn sure that at least one person will forever be scared by how many goddam times I whined and complained how I'm the... well.. bloody hell, no-name modder...
