- Commentary from a friend -

"Well, I saw "Fever Pitch" last night (Friday) at 7:25pm...and to be honest...I wasn't quite sure what I was expecting from this film.  As this film was directed by the Farrelly Brothers who haven't had quite a satisfying film lately, I had quite the low expectations.  (However, with regard to the Farrelly's resume, their previous effort "Stuck on You" was probably a decent effort and had some decent laughs...at least a whole lot better than the outright dumb and disappointing "Shallow Hal".)  Anyways, as I was watching their latest effort "Fever Pitch", I became quite fond of the film actually.  The film was a sweet little story, and was quite a decent little comedy for all those people who could relate to being a die hard sports fan.  As well, the romantic relationship between Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon was very convincing and sweet.  And, I shall say it right here and now, that Drew Barrymore has a lock on being this generations Meg Ryan...it's hers for the taking...and that's not such a bad thing.  Because like Meg, Drew just has that irrestible look to her...her smile, her beauty, her romance, and her sense of comic timing.

Now, the film "Fever Pitch" is based on a novel by Nick Hornsby.  Mr. Hornsby's other novels that have been brought to life on the big screen include "High Fidelity" and "About a Boy."  Personally, I'd probably rank "Fever Pitch", "About a Boy", and then "High Fidelity."   But that's just me...

The basic plot of "Fever Pitch" consists of Ben Wrightmann (Jimmy Fallon) who is a junior high algebra teacher, who one day takes his class on a field trip and meets Lindsay Meeks (Drew Barrymore).  It is Ben's tradition to take his class to some company where algebra is used to some conveyance.  Lindsay, I think, works for a marketing/advertising company.

Along the way, Lindsay is quite unsure of this relationship...but she thinks that maybe Ben could be the guy after such lousy relationships in the past.  Not the mention the fact, that Lindsay made herself sick the night of their "first date"...so instead of leaving...Ben became the ultimate romantic by taking care of Lindsay...even going as far as cleaning up the toilet and bathroom at Lindsay's place.  Ben even brushes Lindsay's dog's teeth...although Lindsay isn't sure since her eyes aren't focused and she feels groggy.

As the relationship progresses, Lindsay begins falling for Ben.  That is, until spring training for the upcoming baseball season begins.  This is because ever since childhood...Ben was essentially raised by his Uncle and was raised on being a Red Sox fan.   A true die hard fan, through and through.  Ben is so enamored with the Red Sox that his whole bedroom and apartment consists of Red Sox memorabilia.  Ben even wakes up every morning by kissing a picture of a famous player with his fingers before walking in the bathroom.  He even has Red Sox towels.

However, things begin to grow shaky in the relationship as Lindsay begins to understand Ben's lifelong fandom.  Lindsay's girlfriends all say that it's just a fad, except one who believes Ben is not really interested in the relationship...either that or the girlfriend is just jealous of Ben herself.

Throughout the film, there are the traditional romantic comedy elements.  But they all work here, even the the comedy with Ben's buddies is decently done.  Not to mention the fact that some of the moments are quite golden.  For example, one of his friends is a anesthesiologist and there is a scene where all Ben's buddies find him lax in his easy chair watching old Red Sox videos of them losing...the friends take it upon themselves to wake up and shower their friend.  But the doctor (played by Willie Garson...the guy from Wormhole X-Treme), takes it upon himself to do the shaving even on Ben's private parts...and Ben's remarks are "No, I don't want you to shave there."  Another moment, is when Lindsay and her girlfriends are having girl talk...and one friend tell's her that she once had an experience with a boyfriend that needless to say involved a bag of hair...

Anyways...as the film ends around the miraculous Red Sox win of last year...Ben and Lindsay find each other and the love for each other.

Therefore, I shall give this film a 3.5/4 stars and a 8.5/10."
