"Well, I watched "Cellular" on Saturday at 9:40pm...to say the least this film was pretty damn enjoyable to watch...
The film "Cellular" was created by the same individual, Larry Cohen, who had written the claustrophobic "Phone Booth" that starred Colin Ferrell...however, Cohen merely came up with the story idea and left the screenwriting to a newcomer whose name escapes me at the moment.
Anyways, where "Phone Booth" was about a successful publicist who was being taunted over a phone booth phone by a sociopath marksman, the idea behind "Cellular" is about a woman who has been kidnapped to an attic in an undisclosed house. In the film, this woman is Jessica Martin as portayed by Kim Basinger, Martin is a high school science teacher. Previously, Martin was just trying to send off her son to school in the morning before she went off to teach. However, the men who broke into Martin's home and kidnapped Jessica and put her in the attic have no remorse for what Jessica has done. However, it is not clear to Jessica why she is being kidnapped or why her housekeeper was shot dead. While Jessica was put in the attic, the lead henchman played by Jason Stathem took a sledge hammer and knocked the wall phone to the ground leaving no apparent signs for communication. However, Jessica becomes resourceful enough to try and connect the wires to get any kind of connection she can. Jessica becomes successful by connecting to an apparent cell phone that belongs to Ryan. Ryan (Chris Evans) is your typical beach going lad who first thinks that the phone call is some sort of gimmick or prank. One of the things that is going on right now for Ryan is the future with ex-girlfriend Chloe (Jennifer Biel).
As the movie progresses, Ryan begins to suspect something is actually going on and that Jessica really was kidnapped. Therefore, Ryan agrees to Jessica's demand that he take his cellphone to the police station so that she can talk to the police. Once at the police station, Ryan briefly gives the phone to Officer Mooney (William H. Macy). It seems Mooney has been with the police for 27 years and is hoping for retirement. It seems that he and his wife will open a "day spa."
As the movie goes on for its hour and a half, there are the usual chase sequences. However, the movie offers some key social commentary about the use of cellphones while driving and the like. Overall, the movie was just a fun ride. It was a great little entertaining film. Where "Phone Booth" showed off some really tense moments between on the phone, "Cellular" can be described as a humorous mystery that is just plain fun to watch.
As well, one just has to admire how much fun William H. Macy had with this character. Just the way that he was reacting to the facial mask versus his wife's was just brilliant chemistry. It was one of those things that you could tell he despised what he was doing, and yet he was still doing it out of love for his wife.
Also, Kim Basinger gave a decent attempt if not good at being the damsel in distress.
And, I must say that the climax of the movie was pulse racing. As well, Jason Stathem is a pretty decent action star. Not a bad choice of films as of late with "The Italian Job" and "The Transporter" on the resume.
Therefore, I give this film a 7.5/10 and a 2.5/4."
